light warps and distorts the luminary

like any eye that tries to look upon itself
can only recognize position by the direction it's compelled
I am blurred between my retreating history
and this distance it foretells
when I see it for myself

when the hand that tries to hold that vision
is the same that tears it apart
now it's all that we can do
to send a light across this shoal
I hope it's coming through
are we coming through at all?

I've been trying to set our dials to the sky
measurements set, the end in mind
but when the shadows hit the ground they misalign
and it seethes of a loss of time
hope not to falter when the grandest of our plans get compromised

demands note with the ransom underlined
another chance to remember why we've tried
and I've tried, but I cannot simplify myself
to sit upon that shelf

like every artifact we venture to unearth
that only lends itself to concept
not the purpose that it served
I'm unsure if the meaning I've been leading you to see
will get twisted and obscured
